Villa Boulders

Located in the beautiful and historical southern peninsula suburb of Simon's Town – about 40 km from central Cape Town – this is one of the most charming beach houses around. Cool in summer and cosy in winter, it is an idyllic stay all year round.

With unbelievable views (bring binoculars for whale and birdwatching) and a secret beach a short walk from the house, it is private and quiet, yet easily accessible. Restaurants, antique shops, and a great yacht club are on its doorstep, and hiking trails, scuba diving, and swimming beaches are very close by.

This creative and charming villa has been beautifully decorated by a top designer, and all paintings are by the former resident artist. With ultra-fast Wi-fi, a shaded verandah, and a pool, the property is well-equipped with high-end kitchen equipment, making it ideal for both low-key relaxation and stylish hosting. The large patio is sheltered from the wind and can seat 16 for long, sun-drenched lunches.

Peaceful, picturesque, and ultra-safe (it is located next to a naval base with armed guards at the entry across the road from the house), it is the ultimate space to escape. It is also equally suitable for corporate strategy getaways, team-building, and photo shoots.

The large, award-winning garden was planted by Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens' landscapers 30 years ago. A couple of penguins live here, which makes it one of the only houses in Africa that can boast such a feature! One of the house's best attributes is Lottings, the superb house manager, who is always on hand to help with anything.

Access is available from the Main Road and also via a pedestrian gate with a code to Gay Road below.

Villa Boulders is a villa in Simon's Town, a historic and increasingly trendy town. It has lovely restaurants, antique shops, and a great yacht club. Cape Point, endless hiking trails, scuba diving, and swimming beaches are all very close by. You can rent kayaks and stand-up paddleboards to enjoy the clear water and its rich marine life, or simply relax and enjoy the wonderful views and the many birds in the garden. The large patio is sheltered from the wind and is the best venue for hosting long, sun-drenched lunches!

A car is handy, but the house is served by main bus routes and is a 20-minute walk from the train station. It is then a one-hour journey by train (half of which is along the coast) to the centre of Cape Town.

• Named Villa Boulders, the house could just as well be called Penguin Song – note that the birds are vocal and you might hear them at night and in the morning if they are in the garden.
• There are two bicycles available for use, as well as a blow-up boat, snorkelling gear, and beach equipment.
